Thesis Title: From Medicine Men to Day Trippers: Shamanic Tourism in Iquitos, Peru
About
Evgenia Fotiou is a medical anthropologist with an interest in health and healing in a cross-cultural perspective. She is also researching contemporary spirituality issues. She received her Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology and Latin American Studies from UW-Madison in 2010 and her M.A. in 2001. She is originally from Greece, where she received a B.A. in Communications and Mass Media. She has lived, worked and studied in Greece, Austria, Peru, Germany and the United States and is fluent in Greek, German, English and Spanish.
Her dissertation research was on ayahuasca use in the context of shamanic tourism in Peru. While she pursued her graduate studies, she taught in the Departments of Anthropology and Gender and Women's Studies. She has also worked in the UW-Madison's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology assisting in research on health disparities and perinatal risk among women of color. She is currently a lecturer at the UW-Madison Department of Gender and Women's Studies. She is an energetic member of the professional community and has served on committees and as a reviewer for submitted manuscripts for the Journal Anthropology of Consciousness. She is currently in the process of editing a special issue to be published in the spring of 2012. She has presented at several professional meetings and has chaired and organized panels, bringing together scholars from a variety of disciplines.
